Losing my Balance and Getting Back on Track

I’ve realized lately that i’ve not been a very good role model in terms of what I consistently preach on this website: strength, health, balance, and clean, wholesome eating.

I don’t know where it originated from, but the realization came to me after noticing a couple things:

One, that I seemed to be a bit ‘fluffier’ than normal (what I consider to be an additional layer of fat over my torso that is usually not there), and two, that my skin was appearing red and almost blotchy in certain areas (my chin, cheeks, under my nose).

9 times out of 10 I am happy with my appearance, my body, and my skin. I rarely break out, and I never feel self conscious stripping down to a sports bra at the gym. But after waking up for work for almost the sixth week in a row with a strange, red, uneven complexion, something in me snapped.

At first I was completely in denial about it – ‘Why does this keep happening? Nothing has changed! I’m just doin me!’

I kept thinking about it, convinced that winter had taken it’s toll, and perhaps I could blame the weight on ‘hormones.’

It wasn’t until later that day after making some dinner plans that I realized, I had changed. I had been getting a little bit ‘loose’ with my priorities and health values. Although I am the number one advocate of balance, and will never say no to pizza, I realized I had been taking it too far outside of my extremest limits.

Here’s a few examples:

Weekends have recently been filled with pizza nights, followed by greasy, carb-y big breakfasts, sometimes a little dim-sum, and other unhealthy choices. I have recently got into the habit of eating chocolate after every lunch, and then craving it again after dinner. I’ve even found myself drinking more often than I used to, which leads to me sleeping in and skipping the gym on the weekends.

Sometimes you fall off the wagon, whether you realize it or not. It can be a gradual process that goes unnoticed, or it can be from a sudden change in priorities. What i’m saying is that it happens, and it’s never something to feel guilty about. If, like me, it’s an important piece of your life, you will do what you can to fix it and get back onto the right path.

To mend my ways, i’ve been doing a couple things differently:

  1. Waking up 20 minutes earlier – this gives me more time in the morning so I feel less rushed and get ready. Even though i’m waking up earlier, my eyes are less baggy and I have time to shower, rejuvenating my skin and face.
  2. Setting aside time to workout on the weekends – usually I would go if it fit within my schedule (which it normally did until recently). Now I set out the exact time I want to go, and plan around that. If I cannot make it to my gym, then i’ll go for a tough run outside to boost my metabolism.

All that being said, balance is one of the most important aspects to leading your most healthy and happy lifestyle. Unfortunately, once you start living it at your most extreme limits, then it can no longer be considered ‘balance.’ And if I can’t walk the walk, then who am I to preach this healthy lifestyle?

    I’m so glad you posted this today because I’ve been feeling the EXACT same way. It’s scary how without even noticing you can let bad habits sneak into your routine but hey the most important thing is refocusing and getting back on track 🙂

  3. The fact that you recognized things were out of balance for you is great! Most people don’t even realize what they are doing differently until it’s really hard to get back into the swing of things. Waking up 20 minutes earlier than I do now would probably change my life. I should try it.

  4. This is kind of something I’m struggling with to. I’m living in NYC for a few months so there is so much more fun food around me that I want to try. I’m totally fine with eating fun stuff out at restaurants, but I’ve realized I also started bring it into the house and eating it regularly – while it is in small amounts, I still just don’t need to be eating candy everyday it’s just not what I’m all about.

  5. It’s so nice to know i’m not the only one struggling! I think sometimes we have to put ourselves out there and let people know that this fitness lifestyle isn’t easy and that it takes work and that sometimes we go through a slump!

    I love that you mentioned balance at the end again and thanks for being honest and open about it. Sometimes it is so hard to find a balance. I realised a while back that I can get crazy hooked on sugar. I don’t even eat refined ingredients, but my body will crave any kind of sugar be it honey, coconut sugar or maple syrup. Finally accepting this helped me so much. I do try to allow myself a treat every now and then but I literally have to write down the last time I had a treat because day 5 of treats in a row I will be like “I deserve this right?” to my husband knowing he’ll say yes!! It’s been getting easier but you’re so right, it’s easy to lose balance. I try to eat clean basically 80% of the time so that when I get a treat, I can indulge completely.

    Cool post Beverley, really grabbed my attention. You’re right – it’s easy to lose focus without noticing, and this article really got me thinking again. I’ve also been in winter mode for a while now, and although like you I will never say no to a pizza or beer (or three), it’s definitely easy to say yes once too often too! So thanks for the kick up the arse, it’s time to get back to it properly 🙂
